White Tank Mountain Regional Park

Get to the gate early, especially on a pretty weekend. Verrado sits right at the base of the White Tank Mountains, and the county's White Tank Mountain Regional Park is the big public backyard next door: Sonoran Desert ridges, saguaros, and enough trail mileage to fill a year of weekends.

Public county materials describe on the order of ~30,000 acres, and the county's hiking page lists approximately 30 miles of shared-use trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, plus a nature center and camping. Numbers and maps get updated, so trust the county's maps over anyone's memory.

Which trail first?

We keep this light on purpose. You won't find turn-by-turn directions or difficulty grades here that we haven't checked on a county map.

The Waterfall Trail is the one everybody takes visitors on. It has the views and the crowds, and depending on the season the waterfall may be more of a damp rock. Go early, expect company on nice weekends, and think of it as a good walk with a possible waterfall at the end.

If you want fewer crowds and more elevation, there are longer ridge and loop routes. Pick them off the county maps, not from someone's say-so.

Bikes and horses share some of the same trails, so know who yields to whom and stay on the marked routes.

Fees, hours and the rest

Day-use fees, annual passes, gate hours and holiday changes all live on the county park page. So do campground reservations, pet rules, trail restrictions and nature center programs. An old screenshot on social media isn't policy. We leave dollar amounts and clock times off this page on purpose so we never show you a stale number.

Heat and monsoon season

Heat ends more hikes out here than elevation ever does. In summer, start at sunrise, bring electrolytes, know where your shade is, and pick a real turnaround time. Midday desert hiking is a bad idea.

In monsoon season, lightning and flooded washes are very real. If storms are building, turn around early, because a dry wash can fill fast.

Carry more water than seems reasonable, tell someone your plan, and stay on the trail. County alerts and fire restrictions override anything on this page.

Getting there from Verrado

You're already on the west side, which is the nice part. Still, leave time for the park entrance road and a line at the gate on weekends. If you're also juggling an airport run or an east-Valley trip that day, Getting around the West Valley helps.
